You know that:

  • The IOWA-class ships built between 1940 and 1950 were probably the best battleships ever deployed in the last years of World War II. The state-of-the-art technology of the time, powerful turbines and armament were crucial, especially in the Pacific.
  • The designer, A. I. Chantry, was limited in his development by the 33.5 m width of the Panama Canal locks.
  • The ships had a triple bottom that served as a potable water and fuel tank.
  • In the engine room, a seawater desalination plant was installed with a staggering capacity of 227,000 litres per 24 hours.
  • The artillery shells cartridge filling were colored to identify which ship was firing (Iowa=yellow, New Jersey=blue, Missouri=red, Wisconsin=green).
  • However, the successor Montana class never came into existence because the way of fighting at sea had changed completely.
  • The IOWA class consisted of a total of 6 vessels USS Iowa, USS New Jersey, USS Missouri, USS Wisconsin,USS Illinois and USS Kentucky. The last two ships were never completed.
  • In the fall of 1943, the Iowa transported US President Franklin D. Roosevelt to Casablanca for the Tehran Conference, where the opening of the Western Front was discussed.
  • On board the USS Missouri, the Japanese surrender was signed.
  • The Iowa participated in the battles of Okinawa during World War II, as well as the Korean War and, after rebuilding in 1984, the Gulf War.
  • The last ship, the USS Missouri, was not finally retired from the U.S. arsenal until 31 March 1992.
  • A naval museum has been established on three of the ships, subject, however, to the return of the vessels to the U.S. military in the event of a threat to the country.
  • The USS Iowa suffered an accident on 19 April 1989 when ammunition exploded near the main gun turret. The cause of the accident has never been explained.
  • In 1958, the U.S. Navy command was considering converting some of the ships to carry nuclear missiles. The Navy presented the concept to acting President Dwight D. Eisenhower. He quietly read the plans, looked up at the minister and said, "Boys, do you really want to send 2,000 sailors with a 270-meter ship to the enemy's shores to launch a missile? Wouldn't one bomber with a crew of 3 be enough? " The project was unanimously cancelled on the spot.
