You know that:

  • The M4A3E2 Cobra King tank, nicknamed "Jumbo" for its reinforced armour, was created as a worthy opponent to German heavy tanks on the Western Front ?
  • The Sherman, US registration number 3083084, was the first to reach the perimeter of Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge, helping to save the surrounded 101st US Division ?
  • After heavy fighting in the village of Assenois, this tank continued in the direction of Bastogne, having spotted a group of American soldiers with binoculars on the road, in places the American army had not yet reached ?
  • The tank crew was very cautious because German soldiers in American uniforms were common in the woods. When the tank approached the group, a soldier with binoculars walked up to the commander, shook his hand and said "good to see you". That ended the situation and the tank continued to drive. Who these soldiers with binoculars were is still not clear.
  • Soon the tank crew was replaced and so the identity of the original crew members is probably forgotten forever ?
  • In 2008, Field Chaplain Keith Goode discovered the rusting wreck of the Fist in Bastogne tank near the German town of Rose Barracks?
  • The tank was sent to the Patton Museum at Fort Knox for repair in 2009, where the exterior of the machine was completely restored ?
  • Today, the tank is on display at the National Museum of the U.S. Army in Washington, D.C.?
