You know that:
- The founder of the company, Adam Opel, started out like many of today's car companies with the production of sewing machines and bicycles. It wasn't until his sons Carl, Wilhelm, Heinrich, Friedrich and Ludwig that the automobile industry took off.
- When Adam Opel saw the first car produced in his factories at the end of his life, he said, "This stinking box will never be more than a toy for millionaires who don't know how to spend their money!" Today we know how wrong he was then.
- The Opel Manta was created in 1970 to replace the outdated Opel GT as the main competitor to the equally famous Ford Capri.
- The British know this car as the Vauxhall Cavalier.
- Initially, sales were not very good. This was due to a false legend of rapid rusting of cars from Rüsselsheim, Germany, which reached bizarre proportions. Unhappy owners would stop their cars to cover them with a waterproof tarp every time it rained. Time has shown that this was not true. Unfair competition was behind the spread of the legend.
- The Manta was a success for Opel and actually became an icon of the 1980s. The sports car with the look of American muscle cars found more than 498,000 customers in its short production run.
- The carmaker is proud of its legacy, and so in 2022 the retro electric car Opel MNTA GSe ElektroMOD was created.
