You know that:
- Fabryka Samochodów Osobowych was founded by the Polish government in 1951 with the help of Fiat. The very first car produced was a licensed GAZ M20 under the name FSO Warszawa.
- The FSO Polonez car is actually a rebuilt Polski Fiat 125p, and was named after the Polish dance Polonez.
- The famous designer Giorgetto Giugiaro and Walter de Silva, who later became the chief designer of the Volkswagen Group, also worked on the car's design.
- The first car rolled off the production line in May 1978 and the first presentations to customers showed that there would be a great demand for Polonez cars.
- It was a modern, attractive and very safe car for its time.
- The bodywork even met the very strict limits of American passive safety standards.
- The FSO factory in Warsaw planned to produce 160,000 cars a year, but a persistent shortage of parts and a sluggish socialist economy never achieved its goal.
- There was even a homologation series of 1,000 units with the more powerful 2.0 engine for racing and special purposes, but the heavy though safe bodywork was not suitable for a racing special. The Polish government also lacked the funds to buy engines from abroad, and so the sports version project ended up splitting the produced specials between the police and the army.
- The Polonez Caro was created only in1991 with minor modifications to the bodywork and headlights.
- With only minor modifications, the car was produced for an incredible 24 years. A total of 1,061,807 units were produced.
