You know that:

  • The prototype, designated XH-40, first flew on 22 October 1956.
  • From the original name of the machine HU-1 the nickname "Huey" was created and therefore it was later renamed by switching the letters to UH-1 . The official name Iroquois never caught on.
  • Bell's first ever helicopter, designed by engineer Arthur Young, flew as early as 1943.
  • In total, more than 16,000 of the various versions of this most successful helicopter were produced.
  • The "Huey" was the first helicopter to be equipped with a turbine instead of a piston engine.
  • The HU-1A version was equipped with dual controls and instruments for blind flight.
  • Bell helicopters were produced in many versions and with a variety of armament, and of note are the Killer Hawks equipped with a high-power xenon search light for night searches for enemies around the base.
  • The US Air Force later forced the production of the F version with the more powerful GE T58 engine.
  • The helicopters were also produced under license by the Japanese company Fuji as the UH-1J.
  • Some of the machines were equipped with French SS-11 missiles, which were guided to the target by the operator using a joystick, but the firing accuracy was very low.
  • More than 4,000 were destroyed during the Vietnam War.
