You know that:

  • The development of the tank as part of the ARV project was also a great symbol of freedom for the United Kingdom, as the complete design and subsequent production was created with the participation of exclusively British engineers.
  • Churchill Mk.was the most numerous British tank developed in 1940.
  • Vauxhall had no experience in tank construction, but in the end a strong and reliable machine was created. The army only had reservations about the tank due to the extraordinary discomfort of the interior.
  • A British commander once remarked: "Imagine 5 biscuits in a tin box. Shake it hard. What's left of the biscuits is the crew of a tank after a few kilometers on the road.,,
  • A total of 7,368 units were produced in various versions.
  • Of the total number of units produced, 700 tanks were later converted to mortar vehicles Churchill AVREs, which were extremely valued by the Allies.
  • Thanks to its long construction, it easily overcame the enemy's wide trenches.
  • Only tanks produced after May 1942 were equipped with belt covers, which partially protected the crew from the mud that was coming off.
  • The tank was decently armored for its time, but excruciatingly slow, reaching a speed of 13 km/h in terrain.
  • In addition to weaker armament, the effective deployment was hindered by the high consumption of 682 liters of gasoline per 100 km.
  • Despite its archaic appearance and clumsiness, it was an extremely reliable machine.
  • The tanks saw their first combat deployment near Dieppe on August 19, 1942, when 60 Churchills rolled into German positions, of which 46 were unfortunately destroyed.
  • Despite the heavy losses, the armor proved to be very durable, as more than 80 hits were counted on one of the undamaged tanks.
  • The Churchill tank knocked out the only surviving functional Tiger tank no. 131, which today resides at the Bovington Tank Museum, by striking it in the turret crown and blocking its rotation.
  • Many pieces were given to the Red Army as Allied aid.
