You know that:

  • In 1941, 3 companies, American Bantam, Willys-Overlan and Ford Motors, competed for a government contract for the US Army.
  • The contest was eventually won by Willys Overland Motors Ltd. as they offered a price of only $739 and thus began the glorious era of Jeeps.
  • The car was designed by Karl Probst, who designed the basic concept and design in two days.
  • Willys was able to start mass production on the 73rd day after the project was approved. Such flexibility is unthinkable in today's automotive industry.
  • While Willys supplied cars to the US military, American Bantam and Ford received orders from the Soviet Union and Great Britain.
  • Willys cars were also used by the British Special Air Service units in the fight against the German Afrikakorps units.
  • The SAS was originally formed in 1941 as a group of volunteers consisting mostly of ex-Commandos.
  • The main task of SAS troops in North Africa during the Second World War was to attack and destroy Nazi air bases deep behind the front lines. And they were extremely successful at it.
  • Within a few months, the special forces destroyed over 250 German aircraft on the ground, which had devastating effects on German air superiority.
  • SAS units, whose number did not exceed 2,500 men, were deployed for the most difficult tasks. In the spring of 1945, when it became clear that the war was coming to an end, the troops were safely withdrawn to Britain and took no further part in the fighting.
  • Becoming a SAS member is extremely challenging. Out of 200 candidates, a maximum of 30 candidates will complete the demanding training. The condition for admission is to master the 64 km march with full equipment over the top of Pen y Fan within 20 hours. As soon as the recruits arrive at the finish line, a 6,400 m run and a 3,200 m swim follow. In the following days, training continues with an orientation move in Belize and Brunei with martial arts training. The training is completed with 36 hours of interrogation resistance training. What do you think you could do?

From the memoirs of Tony Palmer SAS:

"One of our special operations took place in January 1942 in Libya. Our mission was to raid an Afrikakorps base. But it was not the kind of operation we were used to. Our mission was not to destroy enemy targets, but to create confusion and chaos among the German soldiers. We fired into the air, shouted and made noise with whatever was at hand, while the other group stole all the fuel and ammunition supplies from the German stores. The action was successful and, as we learned later, the missing supplies made it impossible for the Germans to carry out their planned attack on the regular British Army units. This bought our boys time to build up defensive positions."
